The locality’s name is attested in the following forms: Salinella in 1169, Salinellae en 1198, Salnelles en 1460, Salenelle en 1723.
The Bay is a rich marsh area with diverse plant life and avifauna. On the 7th of June 2021, the prefect of Calvados authorized the re-watering of the Terrains François as a compensatory measure for the extension of the ferry terminal in Ouistreham, thus recreating a wetland.
