Le Prieuré

L'Event des Varechs

Successively named « Le Prieuré », then « L’Event des Varechs » the property was probably once the conventual house of a small religious community1, although there are no records to attest it.

« L’Event des Varechs » suggests that this was a place where kelp2 and seaweeds, used as fertilizer or combustible in the 19th century, was manured.

(1) The other definition of the priory is : Outbuilding of an abbey, including a small number of monks.
(2) Kelp is a mix of macroalgae harvested from the foreshore along the coast. It has been used in agriculture from the 18th century in Normandy to manure the fields but it could also be used for other purposes, such as combustible or soda production for the Manufacture Royale de glaces in Tourlaville (Cotentin) and more recently in food-processing industry.
